Mr. 1218 (the 12 is for L and the 18 is for R)(the L is for Lil and the R is for Rob) has been rhyming since his debut album, Crazy Life, dropped in 1997. While, like so many others, he started as a gangster rapper, he quickly dropped his gang affiliation after being shot in the jaw and witnessing other forms violence. Now he claims to only rep “Brown pride.” Claiming to be the one and only “Oldies man,” Lil Rob often samples the genre for his music, including tunes by The Isley Brothers and James Brown. He started to find commercial success with Twelve Eighteen Pt. I and then followed up with Twelve Eighteen Pt. II featuring “Slow It Down” with R&B and pop singer Frankie J. Since being shot, Rob has grown from just rapping about gangster topics to rapping about other things including girls, cruising, and partying and has gone on to work with E-40, The Game, Paul Wall, and others.
