Before Green Day, punk was meant only a small subculture and smaller clubs. After Green Day, suddenly everyone could be punk. Green Day combined simple pop melodies with punk rock themes of love, alienation, and growing up to become one of the biggest bands in the world. Citing influences everywhere from early punk pioneers to The Who and Queen. The band grew from Berkely, California’s punk rock scene to create Dookie, which sold over 10 million copies and caused the appearance of several Green Day-type bands, like Blink 182 and Sum 41. Soon Green Day was appearing on The Simpsons and working with Iggy Pop. Even with the success of Dookie, it wasn’t until American Idiot that they grew from snot-nosed punks to certified rock stars. The album sold over 16 million copies worldwide and won several awards, as well as criticism from Brandon Flowers of The Killers for its “Anti-Americanism.” Green Day had moved from its small Berkely clubs to selling out arenas and performing with U2. Green Day has influenced several of today’s biggest bands, including Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, The Ataris and Plain White T’s.
