Born the daughter of deacon parents, R&B artist Chrisette Michelle got her start in gospel choirs. Now she sings with a jazzy sound, calling to mind Sarah Vaughan, Erykah Badu, and Ella Fitzgerald. Michele has since been featured on several hip hop albums by the likes of Jay Z, Nas, The Game, and Ghostface Killah. In 2007, her solo debut album I Am was released. Michele worked with several superstars including Run D.M.C., Will.i.am, Babyface, and was able to sample Bob Marley. The album debuted in the top 30 of Billboard’s Top 200 and, without heavy promotion, has sold over 400,000 copies. Following the release of her album, she departed on a nationwide tour, co-headlining with Raheem DeVaughn and Solange Knowles (pop superstar Beyonce’s sister) opening. She also worked with The Roots and appeared at a Patti LaBelle tribute concert. In 2009, her 2nd album Epiphany was released, featuring an appearance by Ne-Yo.
