ALVIN!! David Seville first made his famous exclamation in 1958 and Alvin, Simon, and Theodore have gone on to become some of the most famous rodents ever. Seville’s first big hit, as voiced by Ross Bagdasarian Jr., was “Witch Doctor.” Although the song did not feature the Chipmunks at first, a re-recording was later released with Alvin and company. The song would undergo a resurgence in 2006 when sung by Homer Simpson. The Chipmunks first officially appeared with the holiday song “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late).” The song would go on to sell over 4 million copies in 7 weeks. The Alvin Show was launched in 1961, but lasted only 1 year. In 1983, however, the Chipmunks would find new life with the second animated series titled “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” Just like Diana Ross and The Supremes, Alvin was stepping out to front the group. In the 80s cartoon, the group sang a variety of classic pop and rock songs by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Elton John, and others. In the 90s, Alvin and the boys started to share the spotlight with guest stars like Will Smith. The Chipmunks had a surge in popularity in 2007 when they starred in a live action/CGI film starring Jesse McCartney (as Theodore) and featuring the high pitched “chipmunk voice” on songs by Lipps, Inc and other modern rock, pop, R&B, and hip-hop songs.
